Spouse and I moving states and changing jobs. We need to get her insured for at least August, but it costs more than TRIPLE to add her to my plan. What’s the best option?

My spouse and I are moving to a different state next month around August 9. I already started my new job in June (working remotely for now) and my health insurance coverage was effective July 1. However, I haven’t selected my plan yet, and I need to do so soon.

My spouse is ending her job in our current state this week, and her health insurance will end July 31. It likely won’t be until mid-August until she starts working again somewhere, which means she likely wouldn’t be eligible for insurance until September 1. That leaves her uninsured for all of August.

My original thought was, just hop on my plan (since her losing health coverage is a “life changing event”), and we’ll adjust if we need to during open enrollment in November. However, this is way more expensive than I imagined. If I select the PPO plan through work, it’s $65.51/month for just me or $225.11/month for me + one. If I select the HDHP, it’s $52.41/month for just me or $180.09 for me + one.

The other alternative is she can extend her health insurance through her current employer for a whopping $1,000/month.

So it seems our options are:

Go with the PPO plan, insure myself for July, and add her to my plan from Aug-Dec. Go with the HDHP, insure myself for July, and add her to my plan from Aug-Dec. Just insure myself, and let her go uninsured until she can find a job (bwahaha!) Just insure myself, and have her extend her insurance for $1,000 through her old job. OR, I just learned there’s a 60-day special enrollment period through healthcare.gov (or MNSure in our case). BUT, that raises another set of questions. Will the premiums for that plan cost more than simply adding her to mine? Will she be denied the discounts since my employer could technically cover her? What if something happens between August 1 and August 9, and we haven’t moved yet? Should she enroll right away, or wait to see if she can get her own health insurance within that 60-day window first? What if she does wait, and something happens like an injury in that 60-day window?

Please help me understand what the best option is!
