I’m in the US (Georgia), and I have United Healthcare. It’s one of the high deductible accounts, where they pay nothing until I reach $5,000 of medical bills processed through the insurance. But here’s the kicker: I’ve discovered that when I compare the price of prescriptions and services using my insurance and the “self-pay” option which means the price for someone without insurance, the “self-pay” option is always about 30% less! So I’m paying all this money for insurance, and the result is that everything costs more than if I didn’t have insurance!
Examples:
Sleep study – without insurance $1200 – with insurance: $1800
CPAP device – without insurance $2200 – with insurance: $2800
Prescription – without insurance $16/mo (using GoodRX) – with insurance: $24/mo
So I’ve been doing just what they want me to – paying the self-pay option. This way none of it goes towards the $5,000 deductible and they’ll likely never have to pay for a thing.
The US health insurance industry is the worst.
