US international student in Canada wondering about dual insurance

Just immigrated to Canada temporarily for a PhD program. My university will cover me comprehensively in Canada while I am here. Which is great! However given the Covid test requirements for border crossing on both sides (which I will need to do at least once every 60 days to keep my vehicle registration in US) and that there are medical backlogs in my province, I would like to keep US insurance as well so I can receive free covid tests and medical care in the US if I decide to continue monitoring my conditions in the US.

I was on marketplace insurance in my previous residence state which I cancelled. I successfully submitted an application for the state where my permanent residence will be while an expat (MI). This is my family’s residence and where my license, vehicles, bank etc are all tied.

I want to confirm there is no penalty for having insurance in both Canada and the US as long as I maintain that permanent residence. I obviously understand my US and Canadian insurance will only work in their respective countries.

Thanks!
