Question: Electing COBRA after starting new job

I left my job in June and will be starting a new job later this month in August. I haven’t elected COBRA yet because I’m hoping that I won’t incur any medical expenses before I start my new job. I plan to elect COBRA medical insurance retroactively only if I need to. I also understand that I can’t have COBRA insurance and insurance with my new employer at the same time.

However, I did see a dentist while I didn’t have insurance, and it would be worth it to elect COBRA for the dental insurance portion only. I haven’t sent in my form yet though, just in case of any medical incidents. I don’t believe I can elect only dental coverage now, and then separately elect medical coverage later.

How should I navigate this? My new job starts August 23, and coverage starts the first day. Could I mail my COBRA form for dental only on August 22, pay for coverage for July and August, and then inform the plan administrator to end coverage on August 23?

By the time they process my form, I would already have started insurance with my new job. Would the plan administrator know that, and would it affect my eligibility to retroactively elect coverage for July and August?
