So this is a little complicated, so I’ll do it in parts and then put the questions beneath the explanation.
I left a job and got a new one. The old one’s insurance plan was supposed to cover me until 8/29/21. However, they canceled the policy as of 8/1/2021. I contacted them to ask for an extension, and they said they could extend coverage until 8/29, like in the original plan. I asked for this under the assumption that my new job’s insurance wouldn’t kick in until 9/1. (Is the extension still under Blue Cross, or would that lie under COBRA or some other thing?) I enrolled in my new job’s plan recently, but they are apparently going to set so it “retroactively” begins on 8/1.
I’ve tried to contact my old employer to tell them to cancel the extension, but let’s say I never get a response (typical of people who no longer pay you), are there going to be any problems? Or will Blue Cross Blue Shield (who provided both plans) see the glitch and just let the new one begin and stop the old one? I have called BCBS and not gotten any straight answers (they claim they’ve not received any paperwork from my old employer), so I’m wondering if there’s any insurance experts here who can give me an idea of what to expect or do. Or do I have to do anything?
