I went to the ER and got three stitches for a lip laceration (went to an urgent care first but they lacked equipment). Normally would never sign up for a HDHP plan but my employer changed insurance companies mid-year and HDHP was the only option for the rest of this year. I had given the hospital my insurance info and the insurance company just sent me a bill for $4008. This is too much for me! The ER billed the insurance $4080 but the HDHP kicked in 90% after the $4000 deductible. I’m guessing the bill would have been significantly less if I was self-pay. Question: Can I go back to the hospital and get my payment option changed to self-pay? Or is there any other method to reduce the amount.
