Am a liable/respobsible to pay my chiropractor for a mistake that they made with my insurance?

Background: I started going to a chiropractor in June under the pretext of my health insurance covered my visits. The office ran a check that they stated multiple times, in conversations my partner and parents were witness to or part if, that I had coverage and only needed to pay a copay. Two months later after the office had a change in staff I was contacted and informed my insurance had not covered any of my visits and I owed the difference in cost that would have been paid by the insurance.

Now after talking on the phone I was initially resigned to make the payment ($500) but after getting some insight I got in touch with my insurance to see the EoBs for my visits. I found out that out of all my visits only one claim had been made by the chiropractor during my second visit, which is when they told me the claim had gone through and my insurance would cover the majority of my visit costs; on the contrary the EoB stated I had no coverage

No EoB exist after this one which is odd as if they were under the impressions I had coverage until recently I should have one for each visit afterwards. I receive one after each appointment I’ve had with all other medical offices I’ve gone to.

Because of this information I’m hesitant to make the payment as I would have never gotten any care from this place if I had know the cost and the fact that they never filed a claim to my health insurance after the initial one showed I had no coverage for chiropractic care makes me believe some nefarious motives or incompetence was involved.

So now I’m trying to figure out what to do? All this information leads me to believe that I’m just paying for a mistake they made and that they should be responsible for. I’m also nervous as I’m ill-informed on the consequences if I tell them I won’t pay and the future actions I’ll have to deal with (dealing with a collections company, a negative ding on my credit, having to go through a small claims court, etc.)

Any advice would be helpful and if this is just a “it is what it is” circumstance then I’m okay accepting that and paying the cost
