So I’ve had a ton of medical issues this year. One doctor has been advocating for some CT scans of my chest, abdomen, and pelvis to rule out any other issues.
I had advocated for an MRI instead due to the radiation dose concerns, and because several doctors said they don’t suspect anything anyway.
MRI’s of course typically don’t get covered, but my doctor did finally agree I could proceed, but may need to pay out of pocket.
So I found an imaging center that accepts cash up front and was quoted $1800 total for all procedures.
I figured let’s just see if insurance would cover it anyway, as I’ve already hit my out of pocket maximum. To my surprise they DID approve all three and gave me the authorization code.
Now I’m suspicious as I’m reading stories of insurance proving approval, but then declining after the fact and patients being stuck with 10k+ bills.
A lot of these stories include the patient going to a different imaging center, then what was pre authorization and situations like that.
So my question, is there any way I could get stiffed with this bill with all approvals given?
Or do I just play it safe and pay the $1800 cash price?
