I resigned from a job in the middle of May and was informed from HR that my health insurance would be active until the end of the month. This is confirmed in the COBRA letter they gave me which clearly states the health insurance would be active until May 31 and after that I would need to pay for COBRA. My kid had a doctor’s appointment the day after my termination day and I thought this was OK. I had a couple days off before I started my next job so my new insurance did not go into effect yet. Fast forward until now and I find out that my claim was denied and I am looking at a $1,800 doctor’s bill. I emailed my old HR and they said that after I left, their insurance broker said my insurance was only valid until my termination day, but no one ever told me. As I said before, I have the COBRA letter in writing that states the insurance would go to the end of the month. Do I have a legitimate case for an appeal here? Who would I appeal to? My old employer, their benefits provider, or the health insurance company? Any help would be appreciated.
