Explain it like I’m 5–what can I submit as out-of-network claims?

Immigrant here–trying to understand the US health insurance system. Please explain this to me like I’m five because I’m not filing any kind of out-of-network claims and I’m sure it’s something I need to start doing.

I have an HMO. What kind of things can I submit as out-of-network claims in that section of my health insurance website? Therapy? Acupuncture? What about services from an in-network provider that weren’t covered, like contacts, or are those already counted somewhere?

What is the purpose? To reach an out-of network deductible? I’m not even sure if I have one. All I can see is an out-of-pocket deductible.
