Doctor’s Office won’t accept cash?

Husband and I work freelance in TX. I reviewed our healthcare options and chose temporary insurance through United Healthcare Choice/ Golden Rule with a $15,000 deductible then 50/50 to $20,000. Our plan was to pay cash for all visits and have this for emergency only so we don’t go bankrupt in case of an accident.

The last time we had a physical, we were on our insurance from our corporate jobs. I called the same doctor to get a “quote”. I said I wanted to pay cash and just wanted to be prepared for the bill at the end. The office said they don’t know what the charge will be until they charge my insurance. I told her I didn’t want to go through insurance because my deductible was so high. I just wanted to pay out-of-pocket. She said they had to charge my insurance.

Why would they do this? I would think they would prefer cash for a standard visit and blood work. What am I not understanding?

In the meantime, we have decided to just go to a lab to get our blood work there. Only $200-$250. But if we get our annual sinus infection and go to a doc-in-the-box, should I tell them we don’t have insurance?
