Spouse and I are reviewing our health plan options for next year, and both of our companies offer a fairly similar layout and cost of plans. One thing we did notice is we both have the option of “individual”, “individual+spouse”, and “individual+family”.
We do not have kids and do not plan to in the next year. But looking at the individual compared to the one for both of us, the price is more than doubled. For me it is $360 for just myself and $876 for the two of us. Theirs is similar. The deductible is also exactly doubled as well. I prefer my plan because spouse works for a Catholic hospital that goes back and forth on covering birth control when not required by law, spouse prefers theirs because it’s easy for coverage at the hospital they work at.
Neither of us have any underlying conditions. Used the dentist twice, optometrist once for one of us, and one wellness visit. Barring unforeseen issues, expect about the same this year.
Is there any benefit to combining our plans, or does it make sense to just pay separately and save the ~$150 upfront?
