Hi r/HealthInsurance, I wanted to get some input on my girlfriend’s current (and very tense) situation.
My girlfriend is currently 22, both she and the rest of her immediate family have had Medicaid for as long as she can remember.
In March of 2021, girlfriend was lucky enough to find a job, whose salary makes her now ineligible for Medicaid.
For the past two months, her Father has been on her to switch the address she has on file with her company, and change it to a siblings that no longer lives at home (and also does not have Medicaid). His reasoning being that her new income will cause her Mother to no longer qualify for Medicaid as well.
This boiled over a few hours ago, into a screaming match between my girlfriend and her Father, and worsened when she tried to ask why her address needed to be switched, to which her Father refused to answer.
I’ve been fortunate to have private insurance my whole life, so I’m a little lost as to why my girlfriend’s new income would make her Mom lose insurance.
It seems sketchy that her Father won’t offer an explanation. To keep it short, in the time I’ve known her Dad, I haven’t found him to be the most “ethical” with money.
What do you think Reddit? I’m in Chicago, IL. Please let me know if I need to clarify anything.
