State: Missouri
Insurance: Former: Blue Cross Blue Shield AZ, Current: Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
Service Provider: Planned Parenthood
Service Provided: Female Sterilization
Summary:
(21F) Hey, first off please no hate over the service provided. I scheduled this surgery back in September with the provider under BCBS of AZ, and it was in network and 100% covered. This month, the plan provider (a step parent) got a new job offer/considerable raise/etc. BUT the gap health insurance from november-january wanted to charge them a lot of money to keep me on their plan, step parent refused and told me the day after I was kicked off of the health insurance. It’s a lot of BS because I know how much they make- but that’s a different rant for a different subreddit.
Biological dad ALSO provides health insurance for me, but it’s Anthem through the Mercy hospital system. The provider has told me that mercy routinely says no to the procedure I am supposed to get, and that they can’t remember the last time it was approved. In my particular case, sterilization isn’t elective, it’s necessary. I can get into the details of why if y’all need them, but I don’t want to throw it out there unasked since this can be a touchy subject. What is the best way to approach this situation? I can’t afford to move the surgical date, plane ticket has already been booked for a friend for post-op, and I’m afraid of not being able to get it at all if I have to move it back.
I do make under the federal poverty line by quite a bit as a one-person household, and am currently a student if I can leverage either of those factors. The hospital hosting the surgery has a financial aid program, but they will not help with “elective” surgeries, which again, mine isn’t in my case. Should I apply for the financial aid anyway? Should I sit tight and wait for an actual answer from Mercy before moving? The surgery is scheduled ten days out as of posting, and I am absolutely panicking.
