I’m turning 26 this month and have been married since 2018. No kids. My husband used to have marketplace insurance but has since used insurance offered through his job. They provide a 50% employer contribution for him. Costs for his individual premiums increased from $78 to $110 biweekly.
To add me, it would be $395 biweekly or $790 monthly, which we absolutely cannot afford. The employer does not offer to cover any portion of my plan, just his.
Can I apply separately for marketplace insurance for just me if he keeps an individual plan through work?
When my husband was on a marketplace plan prior, he undershot income and we had to pay back ~$1,000 at the end of the year. Can I overestimate income to avoid this problem?
Extremely scared — the family plan my father has through his job didn’t cost him a dime, he got to keep it after entering disability/retirement, and it was almost as good as military insurance. That just doesn’t seem to exist in the US anymore. We bought a house in 2019 and financial struggles have already been rough throughout the pandemic. Adding another huge expense just isn’t doable and I don’t know what my options are.
