So, I called my insurance before a doctor’s visit to make sure they accepted my insurance. I was assured that they did. Went to the doctor’s, and a couple weeks later I received a bill in the mail for $200 from the doctor’s office. I called my insurance, and they told me that the billing department submitted the claim incorrectly, and that they needed to submit a claim using the doctors NPI number. Apparently the doctor was covered under my plan, but the clinic itself was not, and that the billing department submitted a claim using the name of the clinic, not the doctor.
Called the doctor’s office, they assured me that they billed correctly and that it was an issue with my insurance. Back and forth and back and forth, until finally my insurance called the doctor’s office billing department, and told them to resubmit a claim using the NPI number, not the name of the clinic. Apparently, things got pretty heated over the phone between my representative and the billing person, and once the insurance representative was back on the phone with me, she told me that she was concerned that they may not submit another claim (???). She gave me a case number, and told me that she recorded detailed notes about everything that had happened. She told me to call back in 2 weeks to see if there was a new claim filed from them, or to check online.
Spoiler alert: no new claim was filed.
I just received another bill in the mail today, saying that if I did not pay the doctor’s office $200, that they were going to send my bill to collections and it would impact my credit score.
So… Uh, what the heck do I do here? File a complaint? How do I make sure that this doesn’t fuck over my credit score?
