Advice on insurance claim denied saying a pre-existing condition!

So I am in a tricky and a complicated situation here and I need advice on how I should proceed.

The incident happened in July where I had to visit the ER for stomach pain which was due to a Kidney stone and I was discharged in a couple of hours. If it is relevant, this was in Washington. Now, my insurance situation was where the complexity lies. I was switching jobs and my previous job ended in April and I was supposed to start my new job on 28th June so I took a traveller’s insurance (I am also on a visa) from April to June end. However for some reason my start date had to shift by a week to 5th July. so there was this 5 day period in between where I wasn’t insured. My miss was I forgot to renew my insurance on the first July itself. Now, This incident happened on 3rd July but I had taken another gap insurance on the same day at 2:00 AM which would cover me for one additional week. and I visited the ER at around 5AM. I was hoping this would be covered by the insurance but now I received a letter that I owe the whole amount because medical records say that your pain started at roughly the same time you took your insurance and thus this falls under a pre existing condition and thus will not be covered. Now I do not fully recall If the pain actually started at 2AM and if I explicitly mentioned that to the doctor. One option the hospital suggested was to submit a medical records amendment form to maybe try updating the time it says when the pain started. but I am not sure if that will work. I wanted to know what can be done in this situation. I know for a fact that I got the insurance before I actually showed any symptoms but how do I prove this? any info of how a pre existing condition is evaluated would also be helpful. I currently owe 6000$ for a simple ER visit and it is something which I can’t afford ๐Ÿ™
