If an uninsured person has a hospital visit, can they get insured after and be covered?

My SO is uninsured because she’s on an assistance program for a very expensive drug that wouldn’t be covered by Medicare or Medicaid and has been working up to be able to afford a proper insurance plan that would cover it.

She has a pretty bad fever and it had me thinking about this. If she were to need a visit to the hospital and rack up a huge bill, could she right away afterwards get commercial insurance and have that bill covered?
