TLDR: I have a chronic gastro illness that’s affecting me performing my job duties. My boss recommended using my STD benefit for 6 months to get healthy. Seeking advice and details on what my insurance carrier needs from my doctor for approval.
Hi! I’m hoping I can get some advice or information on what the approval process for STD entails.
I have a chronic gastro illness that I’ve suffered with since 2013. I went undiagnosed for several years despite seeing several doctors as well as and getting multiple tests and procedures. When it’s bad, it’s really debilitating. The end of last year and throughout this year is the sickest I’ve been. I finally got a partial diagnosis this summer. My current gastro is treating me for that diagnosis and another illness he suspects I have. We’re experimenting with a medication so I’m finally going through a treatment plan.
Because I’ve been so sick this year, I’ve had to ask for accommodations at my job like working odd hours and working from home. When I have flares/episodes, they last several hours and leave me bed ridden, and it’s difficult to work. Despite my current treatment plan, I’m not getting better yet and essentially my job makes my condition worse right now because I’m just not healthy atm, and it’s a demanding job. So I’ve had to ask for additional accommodations, like no travel, no site visits, and the ability to use 1-2 days of PTO a week to reduce workload—all for 6 months. I’m currently stuck in a cycle where my flares are more frequent and intense, this leads to my nutrition, sleep, and other things being affected, which makes me even sicker, and that leads to more frequent and intense flares. So the goal for asking for those accommodations was to reduce physical and mental stress to give my body a chance to heal and to also focus on finding a treatment that works
I told my direct supervisor this and he relayed it to our main boss. I met with my main boss and he basically told me that these accommodations were going to make it difficult for me to do my job and me only writing reports won’t be efficient for the company. He said a bunch of other stuff that stressed me out but then ended with that it sounds like I would benefit from STD. Especially since the goal is to be healthier at the end of the 6 months, meaning I won’t need so many accommodations anymore.
So I’ve been working with HR and my doctor. I just got approved for FMLA and now am going through the STD process. I’m meeting with my doctor’s PA next week to further discuss since my dr is out till the new year. My HR rep said I have to provide my drs name and contact information to New York Life, and they would contact him.
My question is, what does NYL need from my doctor to approve my claim?
