I’m a transgender male looking to get top surgery (mastectomy) in Missouri. Missouri is one of a handful of states that denies Medicaid coverage for any transgender related healthcare, which would include my procedure.
However, my surgeon, who’s located in Kansas City, MO, accepts Medicaid for this procedure. I’m confused at how this is possible, since to my knowledge Medicaid can only be used in the state where you’re covered except for emergencies. If Missouri doesn’t cover this procedure, how does she accept Medicaid for a mastectomy for a trans person?
I don’t think it would be possible for them to bill it a different way (perhaps to make it seem like it’s not a transgender-related procedure), since they specifically require letters from my doctor and therapist to confirm that I’m trans and that I’m ok with the surgery, etc.
I’ve tried to ask the surgeon’s office about this but they said they don’t know anything about insurance except that they accept Medicaid.
