Can employer’s group insurance have a non-calendar year coverage?

In New Jersey, can an employer of a small business chose what dates the group insurance coverage begin and end? For example, coverage starting on 12/20 and ending 12/19 of next year.

I would think most people assume their coverage is for a regular calendar year, and if canceling next year’s coverage – expect a claim on 12/23 of this year should be covered under this year’s insurance. Is this something that can be fought over? Example: child birth on 12/23.
