Is $5,000 normal for the cost of a root canal and crown?

My apologies if this is not the right sub.

I definitely need the work done, so that’s not a dispute. My options are a root canal and crown, or just pulling the teeth, which I’d rather not do. But the cost seems excessive. My insurance will cover $2k, so out of pocket expense I’m looking at $3k. Here’s the quote my dentist gave me, and I’ll add I have no idea what any of it means:

Tooth 1 and 2 – crown porc fused nobel metal: $2,330

Tooth 1 and 2 – core buildup, pins $620

Tooth 1 and 2 – Endodontic therapy $2,087

Total for two teeth: $5,037

Is this price normal? Or should I seek quotes from other dentist offices? Was also thinking about looking for a free clinic or dental school to get the work done for cheaper. If those sort of things are even a good idea for this type of work.
