I currently have Medicaid Managed Care through HealthFirst. I got this plan through “The New York State of Health”. I may have to switch my health insurance soon, so I have a few questions. I will still qualify for Medicaid for the coming year as well.
1.) When I get an authorization for a medical procedure such as an MRI, am I getting it from the insurance company itself (i.e. HealthFirst), or from the NY State of Health? or from Medicaid? Common sense would have me believe that the insurance companies are the ones that give the authorization themselves, so does that mean that if I switch my insurance before my MRI authorization expires, I lose that authorization? Also, will it be easy for the new insurance company (i.e. MetroPlus) to give me an authorization for that same MRI, or will NY State of Health inform them that I already had an authorization for that MRI prior and since I never utilized, I won’t be able to get an authorization again for that same procedure?
Lastly, if I call around and ask different insurance companies if they would cover a certain procedure before I decide if I want to select that insurance company, over another, are they likely to make that information available to me?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
