MediCal Patients: “Illegal to pay out of pocket”?

So I’m a recent graduate from a pharmacy school program, and I recently enrolled in MediCal after school. I’m studying for my board exams when my ear becomes impacted with cerumen (my fault). I tried irrigating with DI water, and scared to put any carbamide solution/hydrogen peroxide because there’s been itching and fluid coming out. It hasn’t bothered me too much, so I just didn’t get around to having it checked out.

I see a CVS Minute Clinic nurse practitioner who referred me to an ENT doc because she confirmed that I had an infection. I schedule an appointment with ENT and arrive to my appointment. The front desk had a hard time locating/verifying my MediCal insurance because it was only recently activated. The front desk lady told me that it was “illegal for me to pay out of pocket” after I asked if I could do that when originally over the phone they quoted me $300-500 out of pocket… I’m wondering if this is because I recently applied for MediCal, and this private clinic doesn’t want to deal with a MediCal patient…

I proceed to searching for an urgent care clinic to be seen, hoping they can do something about my ear so I can get back to studying for my board exams. (It would be nice to be able to hear lecture material from both ears.) I don’t know if it’s because of them knowing I have MediCal and don’t want to overcharge me, but they looked at my ear and simply gave me antibiotics despite me telling them my ear feels full and I can’t hear well from that side.

So at this point, I feel discriminated, and I don’t know where else to be seen. This is affecting my ability to study for my board exam and I am saddened by this experience as well.
