My health insurance is Medicaid and it covers drug and alcohol recovery. I became addicted to pain pills (I actually have chronic pain and never smoked, drank, or have been a polydrug user – I received pain pills BECAUSE my body is so irreversibly messed up), doctor arbitrarily dropped me, and here we are.
I’ve been going into detox since late 2018 and it’s been very clear from my continued failures that 5 days isn’t enough time for me to detox. I can’t take suboxone because I’m allergic so literally my only option is to use methadone to taper off of the opiates.
Three facilities under my insurance perform a methadone detox taper – but they don’t do it for an appropriate amount of time (I need at least 14 days, doctor’s orders – got my GP to write a letter supporting it), nor are any of these places safe. Under these 3 places, I’ve been:
(1) stabbed at the first one then held hostage by staff, unable to call police
(2) Assaulted by some crazy girl and sent to the hospital; kicked me in the stomach so I miscarried
(3) Had to handle another patient’s feces and blood; almost died because of staff neglect during seizures
The insurance company knows about this and I’ve filed complaints about all of these facilities – what happened when I did that!? I got locked out of service and nearly died. If anyone asks why I never sued when these things happened, well, threats and intimidation and being literally barred by the only in-network places for care all go pretty far.
So here I am now: I’ve contacted Philadelphia City Council, a local news channel, the insurance company, and anyone else I can think of. All I want is for my taper to be medically safe (during my last taper in November 2021, I had to AMA because I nearly died because it was too quick. Ended up in the hospital for 3 days.) The ONLY success I’ve had – and the only thing that’s safe – is a 14 day, hospital-based taper. But my insurance won’t cover it. Last year, they promised to send me out of network but then reneged on that as well.
If I can’t have legal painkillers (which I never abused; i am in this situation because my pain doc arbitrarily dropped me), then I have to detox. But my insurance refuses to cover a safe detox and I’ve nearly died a few times from this, the worst case being last November. Any advice?
