Hello all, Starting back in 2020, I started receiving Pandemic unemployment assistance(PUA) money which is unemployment insurance. I was receiving about $1800 a month which would put me above the income limit for me to be eligible for Medicaid for my state (I’m in California). The unemployment money stopped coming in September of 2021. I did not inform Medicaid of the change in income and I recently found out that you need to.
I’ve had Medicaid for as long as I can remember because my parents signed me up a long time ago. With this being said, I had no idea how Medicaid worked or that you even needed to tell them of changes in income. No one ever told me how it worked and I assumed that my parents would’ve told me about the income limit. When I signed up for PUA, Medicaid was nowhere in my mind as I didn’t think it related in anyway. It was an honest mistake and I’m very new to all of this.
What will happen when I inform Medicaid of the income I was receiving and that I was making more than the limit? Will they ask for money back or charge me with fraud and try and send me to jail?
I did look at a website that said this: “Medicaid: As a condition of receiving increased federal Medicaid funds, states must keep Medicaid enrollees covered through the end of the public health emergency, so Medicaid enrollees who begin receiving UI must not lose Medicaid coverage.”
If this is true then maybe it will help me out? Thanks for any advice and info.
