URGENT [AUS]: Anyone knowledgable in health insurance – waiting periods/missed payments

My two children have been on my healthcare as a family cover. At 25 they are no longer considered under the family cover.
My son turned 25 on 21st Nov, didn’t update. I would like him to be covered but having contacted my insurance they said its over 30 days without insurance so he has gone back to no cover which voids all payments I have made up until now, and has to start waiting periods again. He went for an appointment about a hernia a few months before the cover ended but as he was worried about COVID he did not / could not go to get an operation.

I am willing to backpay the month and a half premiums so that he can resume cover as he now needs to get the hernia sorted ASAP as it has gotten very bad, but I’ve been told 30 days is the limit for updating under new cover (it’s now been 50…). Is there any way around this, to backpay or void the waiting periods as he can’t wait 12 months and I don’t have the $4000 for the operation just because we missed the month.

We are very desperate so anyone that knows any way around this issue it would be extremely appreciated, feel sick to my stomach.
My healthfund is HCF – they were very abrupt and did not offer any support whatsoever. I feel that if I go back with valid information I may be able to do something about this.
