Disqualified for Illinois Medicaid due to roommate’s income

I’m really confused about Medicaid’s eligibility requirements. I thought that your household size was based on yourself, your parents (if you’re their dependent), and your spouse, so I selected my household size as 1.

I received a call from someone processing my application and they asked if I lived with anyone else. I said no, my household is just myself but I do have a roommate. They said my roommate would need to be included in my household size even though we’re not related, and since they have an income above Medicaid’s requirement, I will be disqualified even though I have zero income.

I’m just so confused by all of this. How can my roommate’s income—that affects me in no way—determine my Medicaid eligibility? Everything I’ve read online says that the only people who affect your eligibility would be spouses, parents, children, or other people that would be included on your taxes.
