Old Insurance charged after it should have ended – they paid – what’s next?

So at the end of last year I left job. The plan was for me to return to school and work part time at the start of the New year, and I was going to be on my boyfriend’s insurance as a domestic partner (we have been living together for 4+ years). Open enrollment for his insurance was November 2021, I was leaving my job at the end of December 2021. He added me to his insurance during open enrollment period, so I had 2 insurances for about a month or two.

Upon leaving my job in December, my manager told me that I do not need to do anything to cancel, that the last day of the insurance would be the last day of the month. I updated my insurance on the patient portal for my primary doctor’s office and my allergist (removed previous coverage).

(Context: Aetna = old insurance, anthem = new insurance)

I got an email this morning from my allergist office explaining that I need to pay for the whole visit because it wasn’t covered by anthem (seen 1/12/21). Checked on the website, it said that they can’t file any claim until they know what primary insurance paid.

Checked Aetna (old insurance) website, and it appears that it was charged for my 2 primary care visits in January as well as a lab test, the payment was processed and they paid, even though the coverage should have ended at the end of December, and it appears they did not confirm the changes I made by removing the old insurance as I did on the portal.

I did not receive any EOB from aetna for the month of January. No notification that they were charged at all for the month of January. As far as I knew I updated it in the portal, but the office did not confirm the changes so they still got charged without my knowledge.

Ive never had anything like this happen before. What happens next with this? What steps do i have to take next?
