first of all, none of this has happened yet but i’m planning for the worst and google is not helping me.
(tl;dr at the bottom)
for context, i am living in a dorm at college and i might be pregnant. if i am, i plan to get an abortion for several reasons that i don’t feel the need to explain. my family is generally great but my parents are very religious and morally condemn abortions.
i’m worried that if i do get an abortion (using their insurance because i don’t have hundreds of dollars laying around) they will take me off the insurance when they find out.
it’s really annoying because the healthcare system is like “you can seek care without telling your parents <3” but then it’s all so expensive that i have to go through the insurance and they have to find out anyway.
i’ve talked to my insurance company, and the only way to have my explanation of benefits sent directly to my address instead of theirs is to make it so they can’t access my information at all, which is not what i want. because they’re really great and it’s just this one thing, and i don’t want them to feel like i’m cutting them off. plus i can’t afford to pay all my own copays and i don’t know how to work with the insurance and all that shit.
so i’ve resolved to, if i am in fact pregnant, texting them after the fact to let them know just so they aren’t finding out from the insurance company. (and i will pay my own copay for the abortion, it won’t cost them anything extra).
i don’t think they will but i just want to know: is it even legal for them to take me off the plan since i’m still a minor? if they wanted to?
and if anyone has any other advice about confidentiality with the insurance it would be greatly appreciated, because the only thing i knew to ask about was the EOB.
TL;DR if my parents wanted to kick me (a minor) off the insurance for using it to get an abortion, could they?
edit: i’m 17, i’m a minor dependent, and i live in oregon
