I’ve been diagnosed with potentially fatal heart/lung disease. I was referred by my doctors to UC San Diego for open heart surgery, and was approved by them. Booked flights and got time off approved at work only to be told 5 days before flying out that my insurance (UHC community) had denied my coverage for anything out of state. I’ve had a bad experience with the only instate hospital that does this surgery (I live in MI), and the mortality/complication rate would be something like 10x compared to San Diego.
My doctors tried to appeal with my insurance, but were unsuccessful. I know nothing about insurance, have relatively limited income, and have been having a really rough time since receiving this news. Help with what to do next?
