How can I skip the referral for Carpal Tunnel treatment?

I’ll try to make it brief. I moved to a new state and started a new job that is flaring up my carpal tunnel like crazy–but I really love the job. I need to get my wrists seen and treated stat. I haven’t been to an internist in 4 years (shame on me, I know) and the last one I went to was in my old town. I’m pretty sure for my provider I need a referral to see a specialist, ie: neurologist for the CTS.

I’ve been calling internists but they say there is new patient paperwork that has to be filled out on both ends and sent all over and only after that can I make an appointment for 4-6 weeks ahead. I fear I will do way more damage in that time if I wait. And then I have to wait to book a neurologist, too.

Any suggestions how I can dodge some of this red tape? The only other option I can think of is try to get a referral from urgent care but it’s a $50 copay just for the visit so I’d be paying $50 for nothing but the referral. Plus it would be nice to see an internist and catch up on some maintenance testing (STD, pre-diabetes, etc).
