I currently have my primary insurance through Anthem (through my employer), but also have Tricare through my military spouse as secondary insurance. This has worked out well for me so far, since I can send any copays and charges towards my deductible to Tricare, which saves me a great deal out-of-pocket.
That being said, it causes a hassle with my prescription benefits. Prescriptions have to be billed to Anthem first and then the balance sent to Tricare, which means I can’t use the mail-order prescription service for either insurer, and the only retail pharmacy that takes Tricare is Walgreens. So I’ve always just used them for my prescriptions, since I could bill both insurers.
Cut to this month, I get a notice from Anthem that they will no longer be working with Walgreens. I went to pick up a prescription that usually is somewhere between $0-5 (varies from month to month), and it was going to cost me about $35. Pharmacy can’t send the claim to Tricare, because they’ll reject it if it hasn’t been sent to Anthem first.
Now I’m not sure what to do about my prescriptions, because if I change to a different pharmacy that takes Anthem, I can’t use my Tricare benefits without going through a long and arduous reimbursement application process, so my out-of-pocket costs will increase drastically.
Any advice would be very appreciated!
