Is there no way of getting a real health care plan?

I asked this question in /r/NoStupidQuestions and got directed here (I hope I flaired this correctly):

I always thought that the difference between european and US health care was that in europe its mandatory to pay into it and in the US its optional (and additionally there are a lot of scummy plans with hidden cost in the US). But basically that if you wanted to pay the money for a real plan with no deductable, no copay and no coinsurance and read the fineprint you could get one (meaning a plan that covers all your medical cost no matter what with a high level of care for a flat monthly fee with no variable pay whatsoever).

But stuff I read on reddit (like todays frontpage post about destroyed existance despite of health care plan) makes it seem that you cant get real health care no matter what even if you do everything “right”. And at this point I feel stupid for asking. So can somebody please enlighten me?
