I want to know how much a visit to my doctor (a specialist) will cost. I had a surprisingly high bill recently for labwork and am trying to prevent any more surprises. I have a high deductible plan and have not yet met my deductible so i will be responsible for 100% of the negotiated (in network discount) rate. I asked the billing department at the medical office and they said they won’t know until after the appointment. I called insurance and they said they don’t know until the provider submits it. I have used the “estimator” on the portal and it is BS and has never been accurate.
This is absurd. It makes me not want to seek care because I don’t know how much it is going to be. If a visit is going to be $300, I would really question if it is necessary to go vs. if it were $100 I would see the doctor at recommended intervals.
