Doing my taxes and have to pay a couple thousand dollars in taxes this year, partly because I underestimated my 2021 income when applying for health insurance marketplace. I am grateful I made 80k last year and predict that could be my income for the next few years to come. I am 47 ya female, super healthy ( daily yoga, exercise, meditation, healthy eating), live in AZ and HATE paying into our sick-care overpriced system. Paid over $5k for insurance last year and only used it once, for my annual physical. I am thinking of dropping healthcare coverage and putting the $5k into savings/retirement investments. I realize it’s a gamble, bc if I get into a car accident or suddenly need any other type of healthcare, that could be financially devastating. BUT HI coverage is so crappy and over priced anyways, even if I did need to use HI it may not cover everything. I’m totally game for international medical tourism if I ever needed lower cost care. Can I lose my house due to getting into the weeds with medical bills someday, heaven forbid? What other considerations are there for going without health insurance for a super healthy? Feels like a risk either way. This is life.
