I work for a small company with about 15 W2 employees and 30 or so 1099 (who really should be W2, but that is another issue). Since I have been there the policy has been this: Print out receipt of health insurance each month (from spouse, COBRA, marketplace, etc) and get a check for that amount.
Now, mid year, my employer is switching to group coverage. I am currently on my husband’s policy that has above average coverage with below average premiums. I have several health conditions and need a low deductible and out of pocket maximum. The new plan is far below average. I would end up worse off it I took it as the out of pocket maximum is 6X as high as my current plan and the deductive/co pays are significantly higher.
My employer does not want to give me a stipend and it is a take it or leave it benefit. Without a stipend (or if I took the sub par insurance) I feel it is almost like a demotion. My boss thinks it is fair.
There are no other benefits like childcare stipends or tuition reimbursements that the company offers if that makes a difference. Do you think my employer is being reasonable or do I have a right to be upset?
TLDR: Employer’s mid year benefit change leaves me worse off and others better or the same.
