Retiring from Small Company – How to Maintain coverage

I am retiring on Friday from a company with less than 20 employees, in a state with no mini-COBRA that I’m eligible for. My company led me to believe that they would continue to pay for my family-plan health insurance if I worked for them on a part-time, consulting basis after retirement. As of yesterday, that offer was removed from the table. They’ll pay me a consulting rate for any part time hours they need me, but want me to take over my health insurance. My husband and I suspected that this would happen (I mean who gives free health insurance for part time work???), so we’ve been looking at plans available in our state through ACA. We found a plan we think we can live with at least until Nov. 1 when we can change it if need be. However, we can’t get the required paperwork by tomorrow, which is the deadline to get us enrolled/covered on March 1. We also have questions, need to determine if meds are covered, etc. but can’t get an appt. with anyone until March 16 to go over everything. Can we just reimburse my employer for their costs so they can cover us for March? Kind of like a personally-negotiated one month COBRA? We keep reading that you have 60 days to switch coverage, etc. but who’s paying for your health insurance during that time if you’ve left your job voluntarily? Any advice appreciated.
