Baby, Medicaid, Unmarried same-sex couple, cohabitating?

I’m just trying to get a head start on this and I have NO idea how this works since we are an unmarried same-sex couple, living in the same home, with separate incomes.

Basically, I’d like to know if the mother and baby will qualify for medicaid. Her income is below the threshold for medicaid for pregnant women. We pay everything separately except rent, but only I’m on the lease. The father is “unknown” for all intents and purposes; an anonymous donor. I will not sign the birth certificate because we are not married yet; I will eventually do this once we are married and I file to adopt the baby legally.

I do not have health insurance; I do not qualify for medicaid but cannot afford a high premium for private insurance and it isn’t offered through my employer.

How do they verify income? Will it be by her previous tax return? She is an independent contractor, if that helps. Would they need my income since we are not married and I’m *technically* not a parent yet (in the eyes of the law). Feel free to ask any other questions you need. Thanks!
