Question about COBRA with Medicare A only COB

Hi Reddit – I need some help on this,

I have a client who will be leaving their current job shortly and expects to be in-between jobs and medical coverage for a few months. They currently have group health coverage through their current employer group plan and that company is required to offer COBRA.

Client’s spouse is a covered eligible dependent who is disabled and on Social Security Disability (SSDI). As such the spouse is currently covered by Medicare Part A (no Medicare part B) which is provided to all SSDI recipients.

I understand COBRA is the secondary payer to Medicare when Medicare exists prior to an eligible person going on COBRA. The client’s spouse recently had major surgery and has a number of upcoming follow-on physician’s visits scheduled later this month.

Will COBRA cover the doctor visits and any related labs/tests ordered that are not covered by Medicare Part A (which it won’t since Medicare A is hospital coverage only) despite COBRA being secondary?

Are there any gotchas I’m not considering here? I really need to get the correct answer for my client but this one is a bit beyond my expertise.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!
