Traumatic Gynecologist Experience

I don’t know if this is a legal issue, or an insurance issue so I’m posting here just in case someone has some advice for me 🙂

TL;DR: My doctor lied to me about my insurance coverage, charged me for services I do not believe I received, and then refused to let me leave the office until I paid in full. Do I have any recourse at all?

Full: I went for an annual exam today (which I knew was covered under my insurance, and which the receptionist also confirmed when checking me in). Once I was in the exam room and fully unclothed, the doctor came in literally laughing and told me the exam wasn’t going to be covered by my insurance.

I was very uncomfortable because I was naked, she was laughing, and what she was saying did not align with my own understanding…. So I said I would come back for an annual at another time, but had a couple questions about birth control while I was there.

She essentially gave me a pamphlet, didn’t answer any of my questions, and then sent me to reception to check out. The receptionist said she had confirmed via telephone with my insurance that the annual wouldn’t be covered and that since I talked to the doctor about birth control for 2 minutes that I was being charged $200 for a ‘problem’ visit. She refused to let me leave until I paid the full balance with a debit card.

I immediately called my insurance company when I left and confirmed that my annual would have been 100% covered.

Do I have any recourse here at all? I am feeling very embarrassed, overwhelmed, and honestly kind of scammed by someone who I should be able to trust wholeheartedly.
