Need surgery ASAP – Medi-Cal was just approved but doesn’t go into effect until the 1st??

I got some great help here last week and I could really use some additional insight.

Recap: On Sunday, March 6th I fully tore my Achilles and was admitted to the emergency room. They took an x-ray and ultrasound and confirmed the tear and advised I see an orthopedic doctor and get surgery asap. I had no insurance at the time. For the following few days I was on the phone several hours a day to get my Medi-Cal case expedited. My case was approved Friday, March 11th.

I was excited at the news and scheduled an appointment with an Orthopedic Doctor for Monday March, 14. Come to find out at the appointment, I have “just Medi-Cal” which I’m told is virtually useless and can’t be used for any operations/surgeries. The “LA Care Health Plan” part of my Medi-Cal goes into effect April 1st, so I need to call back then to schedule a surgery consultation.

Is there anything I can do? I’m now experiencing a good deal of pain daily and can’t imagine waiting so long for the surgery. I, naively, thought I was in the clear. Is it not possible to get care/surgery and then bill it to Medi-Cal once the policy is active?

Thank you.
