Hi everyone, So my mom owes $54,000 to the hospital. That’s right. Fifty four fucking thousand dollars. She doesn’t have this money in her bank account. Shit, I only have 5 grand in my savings. Where does it stem from? Her multiple visits to the ER over more than a decade. She doesn’t have health insurance. She wasn’t able to qualify for any because she’s undocumented. BUT she is in the process of getting naturalized and I’ll be able to apply for health insurance for her in maybe less than a year. Hopefully, a few months. Now my issue here is that she still owes the hospital $54,000. I’m not sure how to even begin to tackle this. Does anyone have any suggestions? Her English is subpar so I’m not sure if she knew she owed that much or what the case was. Should I call the hospital and see if I can negotiate the bill? Any advice is appreciated thank you. Also I know she’s done a bunch of radiology procedures so I’m guessing some of the bill are from those and all those ER visits. She has a long history of medical problems. Her biggest concern right now is acute kidney injury along with possible blindness.
