I have a surgery scheduled for May 19th. I informed my employer that I would need FMLA, and asked for their information. I currently work in Kentucky, but live in Illinois. I will almost certainly not be returning to work with this employer after this surgery, as my recovery will last well past my FMLA.
My short term disability doesn’t pay out much, and I’ll still be responsible for my health insurance premiums during my FMLA(about $200 per week). After my 12 weeks it FMLA, I’ll have no health insurance. Cobra is an option, but it’s already more than I can afford, and cobra is even more than that. My short term disability will only pay out $500 per week. Take out $200 for insurance, and a $40 co-pay for each physical therapy session, and I’m sure most could understand my concern. Increase that insurance cost even more and it’s just not possible.
My wife has Medicare because she is disabled, but she’s still been on my insurance. I have two adult daughters on my policy right now too. One lives with me, and the other lives in Indiana.
I’m trying to figure out where to even start on health insurance. I really need to try to make this transition smoothly, and as cheaply as possible. I’ll be undergoing physical therapy at least once a week, possibly more, and delay of health coverage could delay my healing and return to work. Can anyone offer any advice, or point me in the direction of help or resources?
