Medicaid Estate Recovery

My brother was on Medicaid in CT and recently passed away. When I met with an Estate Attorney I was informed that the State will likely make a claim against his probate-able estate to recover all the money Medicaid spent on his care. This was news to me, but now I understand it.

I couldn’t find an answer online, and I could go back and ask the Attorney, but does anybody know how long the State has to make it’s claim? My brother was in the hospital for about 3 weeks before he died. I don’t believe he ever received a bill for any of his care, so I’m assuming that the hospital and doctors accepted whatever Medicaid paid. 3 weeks in a hospital could be a large sum. Do I need to keep his entire estate in an Estate Account for years fearing that the State could come back at any time and say, you owe us 100 grand?
