My employer “offers” insurance, but doesn’t make any contributions towards the premium. Am I better off shopping for my own plans elsewhere?

Title honestly.

I’m just trying to see if there is any benefit to choosing a plan directly through them when they don’t contribute anyway. Maybe for tax reasons? Or will I get that back when I file after paying for a plan elsewhere that doesn’t come out my check pre-tax?

Will I be penalized in any way for not choosing a plan “offered” by my employer?
