I tried searching to get some insight, but nothing quite matches our situation.
My husband and I are each employed with coverage offered, and we have an 8 month old. He’s accepted a new offer and so we need to make some decisions. To complicate matters, he is also fully covered at the VA, so doesn’t technically need to get health insurance at all.
I was double covered last year, as there was no + child option, only + family. I would like to avoid that again, as it was a nightmare coordinating benefits.
Option 1 Keep my plan and add daughter – I am currently covered on a HDHP with HSA for which I pay no premium. Deductible of $2150 with OOP of $6200. To add a dependent to my plan (and thereby forego my husband’s plan entirely) would be $228/bi-weekly and result in a deductible of $4300 and OOP of $12,400.
Option 2 Keep my plan, add husband and daughter to his HDHP/HSA plan – I keep my benefits as described above, and add husband and daughter to his plan. Cost would be $81/biweekly, deductible of $5000, OOP $10,000.
Option 3 Keep my plan, add husband and daughter to his PPO plan – I keep my benefits as described above, and add husband and daughter to his plan. Cost would be $217/biweekly, deductible of $2000, OOP $10,000.
Option 4 Add all of us to husband’s HDHP – Total cost of $160.87/bi-weekly, deductible of $5000, OOP $10,000.
Option 5 Add all of us to husband’s PPO – Total cost of $326/bi-weekly, deductible of $2000, OOP $10,000.
If I go with options 4 or 5, I have the additional question of whether to keep my current plan (as I pay $0 in premiums) but it’s automatically my primary so the higher deductible would apply and then we have two as a family, which feels like the wrong thing to do…although I’m not sure I’m basing that on actual data.
Any insight or anything I’ve missed would be greatly appreciated!
