HMO: How do I get a therapist I want if I have to be referred by PCP?

I haven’t chosen my PCP (primary care physician) and I have an HMO.

I asked my insurance how to get mental health care, and they said I had to be referred by my PCP. If my PCP is with Medical Group A (for example), will they only refer within Medical Group A, or will they just give me a general referral, and I can go anywhere in-network?

If they only refer within their medical group, do I then have to 1) go find a therapist I might like to work with, and then 2) find out which PCPs are within that medical group so I can 3) chose the PCP that is in the right medical group? How do I go about it?

Thanks kindly for any clarification.
