Mental health coverage

Hi, I will try to keep this short.

I use to have BCBS with my former employer. For years, I was able to get a prescription refill of Prozac from my general practitioner with no issues.

Fast forward to my new job. They have United. Now, to continue getting refills of my Prozac, I have to see an actual Psychiatrist. I can no longer see my general practitioner for refills because I found this out the hard way when United said my appointment was not coverer. United said because I got a refill from my doctor, this was considered “mental health.”

It kinda makes sense to me, but is it because my BCBS plan didn’t have a separate “mental health” coverage? I know it’s two different companies & plans, but health insurance in the US baffles me.
