Unmarried couple with a new baby in California. What to do about coverage & tax questions.

Hello, my partner and I recently had our first child together last month and I am a little confused on the best route for keeping us all covered as we are only engaged and not yet married.

Currently mom and the baby are on MCAP, mom was on Medi-Cal before the pregnancy as she qualified with her income. I am on employer provided coverage, I make around $75k a year and do not qualify for Medi-Cal. We have always filed taxes separately.

Now with the baby in the mix I’m confused as to what mom and the baby can still qualify for? Who claims the baby on taxes? Does mom need to claim me in household income since the child is mine? Can I claim baby on my taxes but keep on mom’s insurance?

We are happy with her and babies current family practitioner/pediatrician, plus my employer provided insurance is affordable for a single person, but a family plan increases the rate 10x and with mom not working at the moment, becomes unaffordable very quickly.

Any advice is appreciated thank you.
